Song Poster

Introduction

The goal for this project was to communicate a concept using typography as the only visual tool, moving away from traditional imagery. I solved this by designing a bold, expressive front to capture a song’s vibe and a structured, grid-based back to organize complex artist information into a clear hierarchy. The project requirements are as stated: The front of the poster will be a conceptually driven design reflecting the emotional impact of your assigned song using typography only, rather than imagery as your visual language. The front of the poster will contain at least three levels of information: the song title, the artist’s name, and concert information (location, time, etc.). You may wish to think of this typographic manipulation as emotional communication via type. The back of the poster will employ an underlying grid of your choosing and is intended to provide detailed information in a column format about the song and its author, or the history of the band in general.

Process

Before I started my design, I made sure to listen to “Carnival” multiple times and do some research on The Cardigans and their career. They describe the song as having an unrequited love and longing, featuring a narrator who dreams of attending a fair with a love interest who never responds. It is a quintessential 90s track, known for its bright, melodic sound contrasted with bittersweet lyrics. My design is made to capture the song’s journey. The deflating balloon letters on the front represent the narrator’s internal conflicts about their longing for a partner to show up to see them, but they never do, and the slow realization behind that. The stereotypical circus colors of white and red represent the setting as well, since the song’s name is carnival. For the backside, I wanted to bring in the classic “carnival game of strength” by creating illustrations in Adobe Illustrator.
